New partnership to drive better healthcare research and development
13 March 2018
Joint media release with the Minister for Health, the Hon Greg Hunt MP.
The Turnbull Government has set up a new advisory board to work with the United States to promote technology and innovation in healthcare.
The Australian Advisory on Technology and Healthcare Competitiveness will partner with America’s top technology leaders from the United States Council on Competitiveness.
Australia has a unique opportunity to lift the level of engagement between Australian businesses, universities and the research sector to commercialise ideas and solve problems.
The advisory board will be co-chaired by Mr Charles Kiefel OAM, Distinguished Fellow of the Global Federation of Competitiveness Councils, Dr Larry Marshall, Chief Executive Officer of CSIRO, and Dr Jane Wilson, Director of Sonic Healthcare Ltd.
We want to thank the co-chairs for their commitment to Australian jobs and innovation, and for providing their services pro bono.
Their first job will be to establish a new Australia-US Chief Technology Officer Dialogue. This will promote business and research collaboration in areas including health technologies, cyber security, and artificial intelligence.
It is an important step towards forming an alliance with the United States Council on Competitiveness on technology, healthcare and innovation.
The alliance began after a Letter of Intent was signed by the United States Council on Competitiveness.
The alliance supports cooperation between Australian and US companies, research institutions and national laboratories in the areas of innovation, entrepreneurship and competitiveness.
The potential to revolutionise healthcare for Australians through this partnership is exciting. It also joins our commitment to medical research and the development of new and innovative treatments that can make a real difference to Australians.
It is part of the Government’s commitment to empower both Australians and Australian businesses to benefit from the many opportunities innovation and technology provides.
